Dual Language
Program Description
Our PS 14 Dual Language program is designed for students to attain biliteracy and bioracy. Language learning is a long-term process that could take 5-7 years. For instance, students should be part of the program for its entire duration (Kinder through 5th grade)
By joining the program, students will:
- Read, write, speak, and listen in English and Spanish.
- Attain cross-cultural competencies within a linguistically and culturally diverse community.
Our classrooms welcome all multilingual learners. In this way, English and Spanish language learners can have language models.
Scheduling
Our program follows a side-by-side model. This means that students alternate languages throughout the week.
There are two teachers (one Spanish and one English) and two classrooms.
Students stay with their class but rotate between the classrooms depending on the language of instruction for the particular day. By using this model, we ensure that students are exposed 50% of the time to English and 50% of the time to Spanish.
On a regular day, students receive instruction in all content areas in either English or Spanish.
Subjects include reading, writing, phonics, math, science, and social studies.
